Hello!
Hi! I’m Jen — a Chicago born creative Latina and a proud Puerto Rican and Mexican American mother of 3 (high schooler, middle schooler and a toddler). In terms of my upbringing, despite hardships growing up in a single mother household, witnessing domestic violence at a young age, having family in gangs and witnessing drug use, my mom empowered me to follow my dreams. I am a firm believer in grit and the inner power we each innately have.
My Story
I was the first in my family to graduate high school and attend college and graduate school without the help of any of the adults in my life when I was younger. I have a BA and MBA and while I have quite a few things to say about the state of higher education today as an organizer for debt relief, I still believe that education can be a tool for liberation.
With a career journey in the fashion industry and non profit world, working in roles focused on marketing, graphic design, illustration and digital media, I've come to merge my creative passions into the work I do as a freelancer. My studio: Bella Sophia Creative is the culmination of those experiences. In addition to my creative work, I am an educator. I worked as an adjunct professor for over a decade in higher ed, am currently a top teacher on the creative education platform: Skillshare and I run my own youtube channel: The Creative Studio where I share creative tutorials for people interested in graphic design, art and how to use creative software.
In addition to the work I do as a freelance creative and educator, I am a fierce advocate because of the hardships I faced growing up. I believe in using my skills to try and make this world a better place in any small way I can. In the past, I've worked for and volunteered for non profits and I use my graphic design background to lead and support causes that I am passionate about such as: The Debt Collective and the Palestine Activism Collective.
I’m also chronically ill with an auto-immune disease and I’m trying my best to just navigate the ups and downs of life and my career, while trying to be a good mother for my kids and still maintaining my self-identity. It’s been a journey, but I hope my insights can help others in similar situations.
